Well all the dust has finally settled from the 2009 Masters and all I have to say about this years contest was wow! What an enjoyable Masters tournament to watch as all the little side stories sub plots and possible outcomes unfolded into golfs final sudden death out come. First off a congratulatory hooray for Angel Cabrera who did not make it look easy at times but managed to finally come up on top as he stayed steady and grinded it out all the way to the end no matter the obstacle or tree that happen to be in his way. That was amazing to watch
Then you have the stories of Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell who battled with Angel Cabrera all the way to the end through all four days of the Masters. I don’t think anyone could have predicted that these three men would have come together in perhaps the biggest major golf tournament in the world to play the best golf of their careers. As a viewer it was truly a pleasure to watch a few journeyman be in the front of the rest of expected class of golfers that we normally see at the major tournament. All the big names of golf for once were all playing catch up from the very beginning. It was fun to cheer for the underdogs and watch the expected leaders play from behind for the whole tournament. I liked it because you just knew that playing from behind would only force the top players to elevate their games to all new levels as they tried to play catch up to the rest of the field.
Oh boy did the top golfers give us a lot of incredible story and golfing drama to watch unfold in the final day of the Masters tournament. The final pairing and battle between “Lefty” Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods had the golf world smiling big on this day as they put on a golf show that help to raise the bar of golf drama to all new levels. The battle that ensued between Lefty and Tiger on the final day will be talked about and reviewed for years to come. It was described as a major heavyweight title fight that saw great shots exchanged back and forth for the better part of four hours. It’s no secret that Tiger and Lefty are not exactly the best of friends off the field but you could see and feel the mutual respect that was displayed on the course on this day.
Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson managed to push themselves into the spotlight of the Masters because of the epic battle that took place even though they were both playing from behind with little chance of catching the leaders at the top of the Masters leader board. You would be left to wonder what would have happened if Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were paired up for all four days of a tournament. That one round of golf between those powerhouses was a spectacle that had to be seen to be believed. I think I have probably read more about the battle between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson on the last round of the Masters than I have about the eventual winner of the famed Masters Green Jacket Angel Cabrera.
I got the sense once the Masters was over that we are in for one wild ride of a golf season as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will be looking to do battle for 2009. A great golfing rivalry between Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods is sure to be the highlight of the 2009 PGA golf season.
