The home pair of Balbir Singh and Gabbar Bhachu at the weekend beat Sigona’s Rajiv Mediratta and Mohit Mediratta by the narrow margin of one point to claim the overall title during the annual Father and Son Competition sponsored by Freight In Time limited at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.
Playing off handicap 11 and 19, Balbir and Bhachu posted 17 points in the first nine with an impressive 21 at the back nine to win the Kenya Golf Union approved tournament with a total of 38 points with the Medirattas coming second on 37 points.
Another Royal pair of Salim and Farshid Alibhai posted 34 points to claim the third prize though after a countback with another Royal pair Azhar and Aamil Mughal.
The newly introduced Parent/Grand parent-Child/Grand child prize was won by Harish Mediratta/Kush Mediratta with 17 points, with Ash Kapoor on 34 points winning the guest prize and the Longest Drive prize went to Ganeev Giddie (son) in the pair of K. Giddie and Ganeev Giddie while winning the Nearest to the Pin was Sandeep Mistry.
This year, the tournament attracted 90 players or 45 pairs.
Solheim Cup
Internationally, Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam and Sophie Gustafson, Suzann Pettersen of Norway and Briton Catriona Matthew have secured places in Europe’s Solheim Cup side.
The four players qualified for captain Helen Alfredsson’s 12-strong team as the top Europeans on the world rankings, joining five automatic choices from the order of merit.
The five qualifiers from the European money list were British trio Trish Johnson, Laura Davies and Becky Brewerton, France’s Gwladys Nocera and Bettina Hauert of Germany.
Hauert rose from ninth to third on the order of merit after finishing tied second in the Ladies Championship of Europe on Sunday.
Debutant Brewerton becomes the first Welsh representative in the Solheim Cup, the women’s equivalent of the Ryder Cup. Alfredsson is to complete her team by announcing three captain’s picks at a news conference in Stockholm on Tuesday. The US side will be finalised next week for the match at the Halmstad Golf Club in south west Sweden from Sept. 14-16.
